Philippians 4:6 – “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.”

In various trials and tribulations we face daily, we may all respond in different ways, but we can all agree that we tend to look for help – either from a friend, family, or ourselves. In the book of John 16:33, the Lord encourages us to take heart and have peace in Him when we face troubles. Through supplication, we not only take heart and rest in Him, but we also communicate openly to God with humility, which helps us overcome hardships.

Supplication is not simply “asking” God for things, but it is a prayer that asks for help from a posture of desperation and humility. Humility is an important virtue to have, which is also needed in our walk with God. In our faith journey, humility allows us to grow closer to God, submitting and pleasing him more than anything, while pride or self-centeredness hinders our spiritual growth and understanding of the Gospel. In Mark 10:45, we see an example of Jesus’s humility. He was perfect, yet he came on earth to serve us. When we are humble like Jesus, supplication gives us strength and courage during our desperate moments of suffering while waiting for help. Supplication also nourishes our faith and provides an opportunity to grow in our prayer by asking for and receiving from God (1 John 5:14-15). How can we practice a prayer of supplication?

As we continue day 5, let’s practice a prayer of supplication by referring to Philippians 4:6. Begin with praises and thanksgiving, confess your need for God with humility, lament and share your burdens and worries with God. Lastly, close the prayer by asking for God’s will and believe that God will answer you.

Reflection and Application

  • What needs do you want to turn over to God now? Are there also moments in the past where God met the needs in your life? Spend some time writing them down and pray to thank God for His faithfulness in advance.
  • What practical steps do you want to take to live out the prayer you just lifted in your life now, and how do you want to grow in it? Please share it with your accountability partner.
