Transformative Reads – A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23 by W. Phillip Keller

Book Title and Author: A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23 by W. Phillip Keller
Genre: Christian Living, Devotional
Key Theme: Submission, Contentment
Primary Audience: Any age group

Do you find yourself constantly seeking more, and yet never truly being satisfied? Working tirelessly, and having the need to be in control of everything? A shepherd looks at Psalm 23 addresses this issue by drawing parallels between sheep and shepherds, and man and Jesus Christ. The author analyzes Psalm 23, exploring how each verse highlights how Jesus cares for us and meets our every need. That submission does not mean dictatorship, but that a life under the Great Shepherd is filled with profound peace, security, provision, and purpose. An acknowledgment that his intimate knowledge of us means he knows what is best for us.

The author builds upon his real life experiences as a shepherd, caring for his flock of sheep. He connects challenges and discoveries with biblical truths about Jesus being the Great Shepherd. Like sheep, we exhibit mob instincts, fears, timidity, stubbornness, ignorance, and perverse habits. Left to our own devices, and without proper care, we would not lead meaningful and fruitful lives. However, the keen attention and meticulous care of a shepherd ensures that our needs are met, and that we are content.

A key insight is found in Chapter 4: “He Leads Me Beside Quiet Waters”. Thirst indicates that the body needs its water supply replenished. In a similar manner, our souls need the water of the Spirit of the eternal God. When sheep are not provided with a clean and pure water source, they wander in search for it elsewhere. Often drinking from polluted and impure sources, leading to detrimental consequences. Similarly, when we thirst for meaning and true satisfaction, this can only ever be found in God. Seeking elsewhere will lead to temporary satisfaction that will eventually fade. How do we then quench our thirst with Living Water? First, spend time reading His Word and communing with Him. Next, seek Him out and trust him despite the seemingly bleak circumstances. Lastly, follow His guidance and direction as only a life in Christ can truly satisfy.

This book really helped to put things into perspective. A reminder that God created every single thing we see, highlighting his unimaginable power and sovereignty. That I am but a speck of dust in this vast universe, and yet He loves and cares for me so deeply. I am His because He created me, died for me, and continues to lay himself out for me. So how could I not choose to submit myself under Him? Knowing full well that He has my best interests at heart and meets my every need. The simplest actionable next step is to spend time in prayer and reflection when met with a crossroad/decision. Remembering that as sheep, we seek out after things that never truly satisfy, and only our shepherd can provide guidance and correction, ultimately leading us to a fulfilled life.
